Manjula grew up in a small, rural village in India. Her family eventually immigrated to the United States when she was in the eighth grade to find more opportunities. Now, she serves as an educator and principal, where she uses her experiences to combat racial tension and actively advocate for her students.
Lynn grew up in South Vietnam under a communist regime after the Vietnam War, where her family faced intense political discrimination from local officials. She chose to leave for America in the middle of her veterinary program. After arriving in winter to a tiny, crowded apartment, she worked hard, went back to school, and even joined the military to use the GI Bill. Now an educator, she raised three children in the U.S. and encourages others to approach everything with passion and constant reflection.
Iris moved by herself from Guangzhou, China, to Los Angeles at just 14 years old to escape a rigid school system. Living with a strict host family, she had to quickly learn how to manage her own life, school tracking, and a massive language barrier by translating materials word-for-word. She hopes to use her voice to advocate for international students and "zero-generation" immigrants.
Johana Orihuela Martinez was born and raised in Mexico City before moving to the United States around 2018 due to her father's company transferring him after a major earthquake demolished his office building. Arriving as an only child who spoke no English, she taught herself the language rapidly by using her mom's phone to translate books word-for-word in her living room. She has used her voice to combat the hyper-sexualized "spicy Latina" stereotype.
Esther grew up in Taiwan, where her daily childhood routine revolved around going to school and practicing the piano for hours every day. In the late 1970s, her family immigrated to Central America for her father's business, before moving again to Los Angeles to join her uncle. To cope with the immense stress and loneliness of these massive cultural shifts, she would run straight to her piano after school to channel her emotions. Her passion eventually bloomed into a passion for teaching, and she has spent decades working as a one-on-one piano teacher.
